A "pré" is a field (a small prairie), essentially any flat piece of land with grasses. To wit: the circumflex accent over the "a" replaces the "s" that used to follow it whereas the English kept the "s". Any farm boy knows the difference between a field and a pasture, and so will a city boy after he's stepped in a cow patty in a pasture...
