I think you'll find they keep the word 'pole' in FR too (I did some translations for Moto GP a while back), and I believe (though am not sure!) that they also keep the EN spelling of it (i.e. don't try and turn it into the FR word 'pôle').
It means, of course, 'being in pole position' — just motor racing jargon!
