"I drove the new Smart. CHrisL you hit it on the head. Imagine an early 70's Chevrolet with an automatic, with a slipping torque converter. That is what it felt like. Manual changing the gears with the paddles did not help. I manually up shifted from 2-3 and there was about a 2 second delay before the transmission shifted. When in auto mode the shifts are slow, with poor matching of revs to clutch engagement resulting in that rocking motion Chris described. If these cars fail the transmission will be the main reason. If you are going to use an automated clutch, the shifts need to be lighting quick or you get the feeling you are driving with someone learning to drive a clutch for the first time."
