bruit provenant de l'alternateur
Explanation:
Context is insufficient to be sure, but if this is the electrical generator usually fitted to car or lorry engines, then it would be called an 'alternateur' (it's not actually a self-contained generating set).

bruit / cri de mule

Explanation:
Typo : genny = jenny !

I remember, my car did it once ...

I don't remember what the problem was, but for sure it was a jenny noise !

It certainly has nothing to do with the alternator / generator or whatever "or" :

"Remove the balance shaft drive chain tensioner bolts" ...

And it never did it again ( to me ) ...

I forgot the refs :

May a picture of my car help ?

I did'nt find any reference for "jenny noise" out of a car ...

But one thing for sure, for alternator / generator noisy problems, "Remove the balance shaft drive chain tensioner bolts" does not make much sense ...

So jenny vs genny, which one is the right answer ?

It's a matter of probabilities that the asker can for sure estimate !
