English term or phrase:Volume battery
Bonjour,
Dans une brochure de présentation de véhicules, le terme "volume battery" est opposé au terme "AGM battery". Avez-vous une idée de la manière de traduire "volume battery" ?? Je ne trouve aucune occurrence de "batterie de volume" ou autre...
Explanation: Agree with Tony - AGM batteries are much more powerful for an equal volume, or if the power stays the same, they are less large - henec "batterie conventionnelle plus volumineuse"
"One result of this design is a much higher ratio of power to "floorspace" than large, flooded type battery systems;[citation needed] another is a high-rate power capacity, though of relatively short duration.[citation needed] As a result, VRLA batteries are frequently employed in UPS (uninterruptible power supply) or other high-rate applications. Long duration applications such as telecommunications are not as well-suited to VRLA batteries, as there are other, more applicable battery designs available." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agm_battery
I don't think anyone doubts for a minute the technical logic of what you're trying to say, over and over again.
All I'm trying to get across is that the use of the term 'volume' here may have a more specialist sense to it, which may need to be rendered differently in FR.
exactly, technically speaking it is not difficult to understand that AGM, which is a technology using a small volume, is opposed to the term of "volume battery"
so We are not obliged here to know comprehensively how AGM operates.

I still contend that this is not just a simple use of the word 'volume' to mean 'big', but is a specialist technical use of the word to indicate something specific about the actual battery technology itself, in the same register as 'AGM'.
Dear Myrtrad, if you read my comment carefully, and understood it properly, you would have seen that I was not suggesting it was important to be a native-speaker in order to translate properly (though as has been discussed at length on his site, it is questionable whether it is a clever idea to translate into a target language in which one is not a native-speaker or has a native-level mastery...) — what I actually said was that I don't think the original writer would have expressed it that way had they been an ENS.
There are some ways of expressing things that just wouldn't be in the forefront of the mind of a native-speaker — in this case, the decidely eccentric use of 'volume' to qualify 'battery' instead of the correct adjective 'voluminous'; this is not to say it is necessarily wrong, or that it could never be expressed that way — simply that if the text was written by an ENS, this is probably a less likely intended meaning.
to gain volume in automotive is so important. And the asker explained the context: volume battery is opposed to the AGM, thing that french links corroborate
Please do let's note that the present context is an automotive application, and nothing (ostensibly) to do with UPS or power convertors — which seems to be a misapprehension under which some people are labouring...
I would doubt that, both from the way the term is constructed in EN, and just from the logic of things; yes, it is a more voluminous battery than an AGM; but I somehow doubt it would normally be expressed that way, at least not by a native-speaker.
I feel it is much more to do with the 'volume' occupied by the acid — i.e. and empty space, instead of being 'trapped' inside a foam mat.
Maybe "volume" just means large or voluminous, as opposed to the "AGM" which might be smaller.
