Explanation:
Oddly enough, R+C for example does actually suggest 'bâtir sur' for just this sort of figurative usage, but personally (as a non-native speaker!) that rings decidely oddly to my ears.

To be honest, whichever way you look at it, the EN source text is pretty ghastly! Sounds like it was written by a tractor engineer rather than a copy-writer... I really don't see how a tractor can "build on" anything, let alone "skills", for goodness' sake. Perhaps 'build on the reputation (of previous models in the range)'

My suggestion above is naught but a feeble attempt to render the EN expression, or at least capture the real meaning (which I think your proposal slightly misses, unless I misunderstood) but I truly feel the best thing would be to re-write as a proper piece of FR sales copy.

il me semble que la phrase en anglais implique une notion de "base solide", plus que de "travail"

en effet, "to build on" exprime le fait de "profiter" de quelque chose qui est déja construit, et non pas la construction en elle-même.

après, il y a sûrement une traduction plus fluide...
