"I can only add - if a job seeker doesn't know what a road-ranger is - don't even bother applying. More so if they mention a Mack quad box. Left hand needed to shift the 4 speed main box with the right hand (simultaneously) to shift the 3 speed splitter box (next to the main box lever on the left) while steering the (non power steering) truck with ones right elbow/arm through the spokes :)
PS: Deutz was a two handed effort too! 6 speed main with 2 speed splitter.

"There are several common alternatives for the shifting pattern. Usual types are:
* Range transmissions use an "H" pattern through a narrow range of gears, then a "range" control shifts the "H" pattern between high and low ranges. For example, an 8-speed range transmission has an H shift pattern with four gears. The first through fourth gears are accessed when low range is selected. To access the fifth through eighth gears, the range selector is moved to high range, and the gear lever again shifted through the first through fourth gear positions. In high range, the first gear position becomes fifth, the second gear position becomes sixth, and so on.
* Splitter transmissions use an "H" pattern with a wide range of gears, and the other selector splits each sequential gear position in two: First gear is in first position/low split, second gear is in first position/high split, third gear is in second position/low split, fourth gear is in second position/high split, and so on.
* Range-Splitter transmissions combine range-splitting and gear-splitting. This allows even more gear ratios. Both a range selector and a splitter selector are provided." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission
Could it be that "single-splitter" means that gear changes do not require double clutching? Double clutching used to be required on trucks (hence the reference to older trucks in the fleet), but I have always assumed that was a long time ago.
I don't quite know how you get there from single-splitter, unless it is the idea of the gearbox being split down into a series of single shifts, but this type of box is fitted to certain lorries and ought to make correctly-timed gear-changing easier.
Or could it be something to do with pre-selector semi-auto boxes..?
Wouldn't that English text have been translated from another language (the word "band" makes me think it may have been translated from German)?? And if it was, then what could the original term for "splitter" be?
