During a shift, one element is released and another is applied, resulting in a different ratio. This is called a clutch to clutch shift.
D'autre part, il est question de "2nd gear (1.67:1) and 2nd prime (1.50:1) gear". Comment doit-on traduire prime ?

Dans une boîte automatique, les passages (shifts) peuvent se faire par application d'embrayages qui entraînent un élément ou un autre d'un train épicycloïdal, par freinage d'un de ces éléments (par un frein à bande) ou blocage hydraulique (par une électrovanne).
C'est donc l'explication pour ce type de passage.
Pour "prime" j'utiliserais "seconde longue" vu le rapport annoncé, qui ressemble à celui des dispositifs de surmultiplication anciennement appelés "overdrive" et couramment utilisés sur les rapports finaux des boîtes auto.
