Unpublished data using sediment cores from a flow-through wetland in South Africa analysed for insecticide compounds at various depths layers suggested that current-use organophosphate insecticides were only present in the upper depth layers.

OK for profondeur - it's not the same as saying something is "profond" - upper depth levels = faibles profondeurs and not "les plus superficielles des couches profondes"
"Depth layers" does not mean "couches profondes" here, Lionel. It is used to mean "layers at different depths". "Depth" is "niveau", not necessarily "deep". A depth can be "shallow".
