A fin de faire face à la déferlante des "agrees" donnés à une proposition que je trouve maladroite, le Robert:

Il semble donc que "donner une impression" n'est pas tenter (délibérément) d'accréditer une idée , une théorie précise ( tel est coupable de ceci et de cela) mais émettre (de façon plutôt involontaire, y compris pour l'écrivain cité) des signaux qui tendent à imprimer dans la conscience quelque chose de vague, d'indéfinissable...
"essayer" aussi me semble très maladroit, ce soir peut-être pour tenter d'expliquer...

'visait à' means 'aimed to' and corresponds to 'tried to' in the source text and this is not actually part of the original question.

The core of my answer is 'culpabiliser' which means 'put the blame on someone', or 'attribute fault to someone'.
