English term or phrase: as effete
We [have seen Winterbourne] so subtly and quickly [as effete in a moment at the Pincio earlier on wherein Winterbourne proved himself incapable of responding to Daisy] that we [have remained] dependent upon his view of things to the end, failing to withdraw from him until too late

Ysabel812: 9:05am May 26, 2008: I'm a bit confused by your use of brackets: are these your own explanations or does the original text contain them?
Thanks
Myriam Dupouy: 9:10am May 26, 2008: Do you work for someone called "Alex" ? I translated many things for him about Bogdanovich...Funny...
Myriam Dupouy: 9:14am May 26, 2008: I would use "impuissant"...
Marie-Ange WEST: 9:14am May 26, 2008: The brackets are in the original text, and I don't work for someone called "Alex".
Marie-Ange WEST: 1:46pm May 27, 2008: Pourrait-on dire: "impuissant à un certain moment, un peu plus tôt au Pincio, lorsque Winterbourne..."

Language variant: veule

Explanation:

Asker: Merci, mais, comment traduiriez-vous "AS effete"? "Comme mou" ne va pas vraiment bien.
