La conception de l'architecture générale du système UPLA (UQAM Provisionning Lightpath Application) a débuté en janvier 2003. Il s'agissait de décrire les différents modules du système, leurs fonctionnalités et les principaux scénarios d'interaction entre eux pour aboutir aux finalités que sont la recherche, la réservation et le déploiement de chemins optiques traversant plusieurs systèmes autonomes (AS).

Un nouveau modèle de trafic a été proposé en combinant trois types de demandes de trafic à savoir les demandes de trafic permanentes (Permanent Lightpath Demands, (PLDs)), les demandes de trafic pré-planifiées (Scheduled Lightpath Demands, (SLDs)) et les demandes de trafic aléatoires (Random Lightpath Demands, (RLDs)).
