It may be important here... 15:15 Jul 28, 2011
...to know just what the author's intention was, since I find this expression with 'kerbside' rather ambiguous; it might refer to vendors on the edge of the pavement offering things to eat to people in passing vehicles; conversely, it might refer to people parking vehicles alongside the pavement in order to sell food to pedestrians.
It might, of course, also refer to people eating on the pavement (with no specific reference to where the food itself comes from); however, I can't help feeling this would be more likely to be referred to as 'roadside dining' — to me, 'kerbside' has a definite connotation of 'from the point of view of a vehicle on the road', as distinct from 'roadside', which connotes more 'from the point of view of a pedestrian on the pavement' ; though do cf. 'roadside diner' = a restaurant alongside a highway (in the broader sense)
Are we still talking about Phnom Penh, by the way? It may help to know that. |
