Another meal out with my girlfriend soured by crappy service. I get the bill, they’ve added on an optional service charge – it’s usually about 12.5%, right? I don’t want to pay it as the service was substandard. I don’t have enough cash so I pay with my card. But on being handed the card terminal to enter my PIN, I see I must pay the amount inclusive of the so-called ‘optional’ service charge."
