this is the term given by Termium. All universities seek important research fellows so this professor has been promoted to Associate Chair which does not necessarily involve admin (or even lecturing) as such but further research in their speciality and supervising Masters or doctorate theses. You've just described two different types of "chair":
1/ chair of department is just like a chairperson directing things, coordinating courses and so on but is not an academic "Chair". Every department has a chairperson at its head. This not normally an endowed position, though the titleholder may occupy an endowed or otherwise funded chair connected with their teaching position.
2/ A professor who is offered a Chair, can spend more time on researching their own speciality (and has reduced or no lecturing hours) and directing post graduate students with their these. There can be many funded chairs in a department. Never heard of an "associate chair" in this context. Perhaps I'm wrong, but this doesn't sound right to me for this thread.
We can disagree, but the Asker has the •complete* context, and (I imagine) access to a local university – perhaps even to the university in question. Up to the Asker to decide. It's done...
just to be clear, chair of department is just like a chairperson directing things, coordinating courses and so on but is not an academic "Chair". These "Chairs" are sometimes endowed but not always. Funds for the research can come from the college itself, from trust funds, from individuals and/or from industry and corporations. A professor who is offered a Chair, can spend more time on researching their own speciality (and has reduced or no lecturing hours) and directing post graduate students with their these. This "Associate chair" is part of the team
– Endowed chairs are faculty positions established to attract and/or retain distinguished faculty members. These faculty positions are often named after the individual(s) who provided the endowment for the chair. Some departments (also, some entire colleges) have no endowed chairs.
– Each department has a chairperson – in the past, called a chairman – now often referred to as the department chair or chair of the department. This is an administrative position, usually in addition to teaching/research/etc. duties, though sometimes department chairs have reduced courseloads.
I'm not absolutely sure, but the "Associate Chair of the University Department of Surgery" in this thread sounds (to me, at least) like the latter.
