Explanation: Note: The term "socket" is misleading. The photo shows a male pin header
Solderless Headers - 10-pin Straight
These are just what they sound like, solderless pin headers! Great for throwing together a quick prototype or if you just don't feel like warming up the soldering iron to attach a few pins. These 0.1" spaced header pins simply snap into place and create a good solid electrical connection. Sold in 10-pin strips. They can be snapped or cut to the desired number of pins. http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://store.mansteri.com...

ERNI pin connectors are one- and two-row plastic strips assembled with square 0.6 x 0.6mm pins. The connector side is completely gold-plated, and the terminal side is tin-plated. Unshrouded headers are available in different connection lengths and termination types. Right-angle versions are also available. http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://img.directindustry...

I just received a picture from my client, illustrating the component in question. There is a header with 6 long pins on one side and 6 short pins on the other side. So, this does not correspond to the 2 answers already given (jmleger and Tony).
That is my whole point, Daniel: it's really no help at all sending us off on wild goose chases looking at all sorts of varieties; the only think that will help is to see the actual one concerned, as there are so many possible varieties.
The use of n-pin is very confusing in EN; it is better when we talk about an n-way connector; but the fact remains that people often unthinkingly refer to an n-pin socket, which is of course contradictory.
Sadly, even the use of 'socket' isn't strictly logically obeyed; normally, it should mean only a connector that has female contacts; however, under some circumstances, particularly when referring to a plug/socket pairing, where the 'socket' is often chassis-mounted, while the 'plug' is cable mounted, it sometimes happens that the chassis-mounted part is still referred to as a 'socket', even if it has pins — the classic example is the 3-pin IEC power socket on your computer (which has pins!), into which you plug the mating plug (which has female socket contacts!) Only in certain specific contexts will you find the more helpfully explicit 'male chassis socket' or 'female cable plug'.
...No, the pages referred to are just to give more contexte. They are not the pages I am translating. The PHRASE (given after the link) is what I have to translate. It's just a list of items. So, it's difficult to have a good context.
Are these illustrations you're giving us the actual articles you're translating — or just random occurrences you've found on the 'Net?
I ask, because even though tye may all be described as XYZ, oall too often, the translation required in Fr will be totally different depending on the exact form it takes, which can vary widely — you can see on the page you quote there are DIN sockets (which can also have 6 pins!) and other, quite different types of connectors as well.
In that case, given the new context information, I'd say 'embase à 6 broches' — from Daniel's description, this seems to be in fact a 'pin header' the long pins are for connecting the female connector, while the short pins go through and are soldered into the holes on the PCB.
Sounds like the opriginal description was wrong; as I have mentioned before, some people call anything that is chassis/PCB mounted a socket, regardless of the gender of the actual connecting elements. Sounds like this may be the case here...
