A “blueprint” is the name given to all copies made from an original drawing or tracing. Although the true blueprint has white lines on a blue background, the term is used for brown, blue-line, and red-line prints. Blueprints give us the following information about making an object:

Un "blue-print" était à l'origine de l'industrie un "bleu", les lignes du tracé se détachant en blanc sur un fond bleu.
Avec l'évolution des procédés de reproduction, on a parlé successivement de "photocalques", puis de "calques" tout court.
Sur fond généralement blanc ou bistre, les traits sont bruns ou constitués par des lignes "bleues" ou "rouges" selon le procésé de reproduction employé.

Explanation:
un "bleu" est le nom donné à toutes les copies faites à partir d'un dessin original.
On dit ici "bleu" même si les lignes ne sont pas blanches sur fond bleu.
