Dans un alliage, on peut avoir de la ségrégation intergranulaire : les éléments d'alliage migrent et viennent se concentrer en priorité dans les joints de grain (là où il y a plus de place). Par ailleurs, si l'alliage présente des précipités, ceux-ci se forment également en priorité aux joints de grain. On peut ainsi avoir une corrosion localisée sur les joints de grains, dite corrosion intergranulaire. Cela provoque un déchaussement des joints de grain.
