A profitable portfolio is pointless if you are not comparing that performance against something. You could be returning 8% a year, but if the market in general is returning 18% a year, then you are losing out on money you could have made.
A benchmark keeps your portfolio in check. It is a comparison tool so that you can see how well you are performing against the market or another portfolio. Most investors benchmark their stock portfolio performance against the S&P 500.

On pourrait comprendre que c'est l'investisseur qui est comparé, mais ce sont les performances de son portefeuille plutôt.
