English term or phrase: Canola spread
Dear colleagues,

I translated the above as "Margarine de colza" but my client came back to me saying that "margarine" had a negative connotation and would prefer if we used another term. They suggested "Pâte à tartiner" (apparently used by one of their competitors) but I said that wasn't suitable for a margarine-type product. I personally don't think "margarine" has a negative connotation but what do you think? How would you translate "Canola spread"?

I would even say that "margarine" has extra appeal because it is implies the absence of animal fat, whose reputation is not too hot among health-conscious customers.
And as you say, "pâte à tartiner" is more something like chocolate spreads and the like, sometning that comes on top of the butter or the margarine.

agree  mirella naumburg: I agree, pâte à tartiner is usually used for something sweet (pâte à tartiner aux amandes, au chocolat, aux noisettes, etc.) Margarine is more appropriate

Explanation:
J'ai personnellement du Almond Spread qui est traduit par beurre d'amandes. Je crois que c'est similaire dans ce cas-ci.
Beurre est employé pour la texture. Également nous avons un produit au Québec: Map-O-Spread, que l'on appelle également beurre d'érable.

disagree  Tony M: The difference is, cocoa produces a butter-like substance, as does carita; but AFAIK, colza doesn't, it only becomes butter-like because of the processing

Quel est le public-cible de cette traduction? Si c'est pour un public québécois, le terme "tartinade"serait idéal.
Si le public est européen ou international, je suis d'accord avec Audrey. Le terme "beurre" désigne: "Pâte faite à partir d’une substance écrasée dans cette matière", ainsi que: "Substance grasse extraite de divers végétaux", ce qui s'appliquerait très bien pour "beurre de colza".
