The context is a brochure presenting epigenetics to the general public, and I'm sure unsure of how to understand/translate performance in the following sentence

“Science is now uncovering what plays our genetic score, and it appears this *performance* can change dramatically between generations without alteration to the DNA sequence. The field of epigenetics seeks to determine how genome function is affected by mechanisms that regulate the way genes are processed. Epigenetic factors include both spatial patterns, such as the arrangement of DNA around histone proteins (chromatin), and biochemical tagging.“

Originally I understood that the word "performance" should be taken as a metaphor (cf "plays our genetic score")but I'm not quite sure now.
Here's my translation or the whole paragraph.

« La science est aujourd’hui en train de lever le voile sur ce qui ‘‘joue’’ notre ‘‘partition’’ génétique, et il semble que la représentation donnée puisse changer considérablement d’une génération sur l’autre, sans que la séquence d’ADN ne subisse de modification. Le domaine de l’épigénétique cherche à déterminer comment la fonction génomique est affectée par des mécanismes qui régulent le mode de transformation des gènes. Parmi les facteurs génétiques en jeu, on trouve aussi bien des schémas spatiaux, comme l’agencement de l’ADN autour des protéines histones (la chromatine), que l’étiquetage génétique. »
