What you do get a full taste of, however, is the stupendous wind that rips down from the Andes across the ice and over the lake’s waters. Apparently nicknamed the ‘Broom of God’, this wind is infamous and I could see why. Blowing at perhaps 60-70 km per hour it roared off the ice and slammed onto the lake, whipping up columns of spray, making it difficult to stand up on deck, and churning up waves that – once the boat was underway – crashed menacingly over our bows.
