I don't see any point trying to go for a literal translation, and I don't think it is usual to translate to New York streets etc. — which are usually numbers anyway, aren't they (like 42nd St)?

You will probably have great difficulty rendering the pun, since surely in FR you will be obliged to say 'les années 40', which ruins the punchline right away!

In New York, the roads running north–south are numbered and called Avenues (e.g. 5th Avenue), while the east–west roads are called streets. So the 'seventies' are the streets from 70th St to 79th St.

agree  writeaway: East Seventies is East of 5th Avenue and West 70's (also a fine neighbourhood is west of 5th Ave. that's the East-West divide. Of course, in the 70's, Central Park is in between the East and West sides
