I'm looking for a French translation of the term "3-D P-wave velocity model".
I've found a definition on the internet, but I couldn't swear to it being correct:
"A three-dimensional (3-D) P wave velocity model to be used for earthquake relocation is obtained by simultaneously inverting arrival times of local earthquakes for hypocenter locations and 3-D P wave velocity structure." http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2003/2002JB001778.shtml
I've also found a definition for "3D velocity model" (I couldn't figure out the difference between that one and "3-D-P-wave velocity model")
3D velocity model = pattern which determine the velocity of the waves. In the case of a volcano, the target is to determine the location of the magma chamber and the depth of it. This is possible thanks to seismicity stations, which are set in different places. These stations will record different arrival times of the waves. We can distinguish 4 different waves: P-waves, S-waves, Rayleigh waves and Love-waves. On the one hand, seismologists know that if the velocity of the waves fall, the waves are near a source of heat. Conversely, the velocity of the waves are high when the environment is composed of solid and cold rocks.
Here you can see the term in its context:
An early 3-D P-wave velocity model derived by Thurber (1984) imaged the summit and rift zones of Kilauea volcano as high-velocity regions, and the adjacent Hilina and Kao'iki fault zones (Fig. 1) as low-velocity zones.
I could only come up with one translation which is most probably not precise enough (modélisation numérique 3D).
