English to French translations [PRO] History / linguistics | | English term or phrase: beachcomber | In this 19th century this new trading-working-bartering relationships was negotiable, commercial and regular. “First contact” was still occurring on more remote or rugged islands but now they also were very different from the brief contacts with naval expeditions in the 16th to 18th centuries. First contact was now likely to be with a resident copra trader, a resident "beachcomber" who doubled as a sandalwood negotiator, a resident missionary or a Sydney trader who made a yearly or twice-yearly visit.
Context : relating first encounters between Pacific islanders an europeans in 16th to 19th century.
Although I quite understand the meaning I am having a hard time finding a good translation/explanation for it.
Thanks for your help. |
