neutral  emiledgar: I know that you're quoting from a dictionary, but I have never seen tug-of-war used to mean "no-holds-barred" which "lutte acharnée" or "sans merci" mean.

agree  emiledgar: yes, to me tug-of-war does not imply "acharnée" in any way, but rather a back and forth, sometimes one side has the territory, sometimes the other does.
