What did happen at Versailles that factored into the progression of events we are considering here was the establishment of the League of Nations which, in Article 22 of its Convention, provided for the setting up of a mandate system as a trust for the Old Ottoman territories.

With the dissolution of the League of Nations after World War II, it was stipulated at the Yalta Conference that the remaining Mandates should be placed under the trusteeship of the United Nations, subject to future discussions and formal agreements.
