English term or phrase:when selected / when not selected
**When selected**, and rooming combinations defined, only search queries that are compatible with the defined rooming combinations give results.
**When not selected**, the product is priced according to one person in one room/car/product.
there's just a chance there might be a clue in an element name. apart from that, unless you can consult the developers, I guess it will have to be a case of the most general term possible, as you say.
My problem is that I have no preceding text as I'm working on a dictionary (XML) that will be used for a website translation. The values I have to translate are isolated and it is impossible for me to find which interface element they 're related to. Thank you anyway !!!
... but your context doesn't include the preceding text. As Tony has said, the exact term depends on the kind of interface element in question.

when selected / not selected
si coché / pas coché
Explanation: Catherine, I think it all depends just how this 'selection' is taking place.
It seems to me that this is probably some kind of check-box, for example, in which case 'selected' may not mean 'picked from a list of options', but something more along the lines of 'when this box is checked / not checked'
You really need to look at the rest of the context, and how this piece of software (or whatever the system is) actually works in order to find the most appropriate term.
