Although less common, I use "personne de l'art" rather than "homme de l'art", because the latter is clearly sexist:
"bien connu de la personne de l'art".
The following equivalent expressions are also much used:
"bien connu dans l'art"

Dans la terminologie "brevets", l'homme du métier (au singulier plutôt qu'au pluriel) est la traduction consacrée pour "those skilled in the art".
En fonction du contexte on pourra aussi modifier la tournure, du genre "notoirement connu" ou autre...
