Following a previous KudoZ question, I am still wondering about the translation of one term in Paris French. I am aware that in Canadian french, the translation is simply "circuit" but this is to be avoided like the plague in France. So in the following expression, does "circuit" refer to "une cour itinérante" or "une circonscription" ? Thank you.

The level of United States courts immediately below the Supreme Court, and from which most decisions are appealed, is the United States Courts of Appeal. The courts of appeal have been around since 1891.
The United States are divided geographically into 12 districts called "circuits", each district being served by a distinct bench of the Court of Appeal. To this can be added the circuit of the District of Columbia and the "Federal Circuit", the latter dealing with federal legal matters such as patents, international trade and trademarks. There are about 175 judges sitting on one or the other of the circuits, the largest being the Ninth (28 judges) and the smallest being the First (six). The size of the bench in each circuit varies and each circuit has their own chief justice

Explanation:
I think the confusion starts here because of the D.C. (District of Columbia) which then becomes a double-take (District of Columbia district) if you spell it out while avoid "circuit".
"district" instead of "circuit" is being confirmed by Babylon and other references. SO it simply takes "some courage" to simply skip the second "district" but you really can. Just read it above. Doesn't it make sense.

Explanation:
Je suis navre mais le Quebec n'utilisera jamais le terme de "circuit" dans ce contexte... Tout aussi bani qu'en France. Il ne s'agit pas d'electricite ou encore de course automobile... Ce terme est strictement americain et se refere au "reseau" mis sur pied par la Cour d'Appel pour entendre les causes selon leur ordre et leur importance.
Comme je l'ai mentionne, la Cour itinerante constitue une bonne piste.
En tout etat de cause, je crois qu'il vous est possible d'ignorer ce terme et d'utiliser tout simplement la Cour d'Appel du District de Colombia....
On pourrait egalement utiliser "La Cour d'Appel a decide en premiere instance de... ".
Les systemes nord-americains en cette matiere sont fort differents de ceux d'Europe en ce sens que les Cours d'Appel constituent la porte d'entree pour acceder a la Cour Supreme dont la decision peut meme ordonner un changement legislatif (pouvoir juridique versus pouvoir legislatif...et politique).

Etant donné le contexte spécifique, je ne vois aucun mal à une simple francisation du terme américain, après tout très particulier, entre guillemets. C'est un système proche de ce que existe en Angleterre et au Pays de Galles aussi.

Circuit judges sit in courts on the particular circuit to which they have been assigned.
