C'est une bonne question, il me semble qu'on réservera l'expression "moyen-oriental(e)", à une utilisation en tant qu'adjectif. Pour un habitant, on dira plus fréquemment "habitant du Moyen-Orient" ou "(personne) originaire du Moyen-Orient".

Odile Stuart: très juste intervention, cependant pour revenir à la question originale, nous sommes en présence d'un nom (généralement parlant) qualifié par un ensemble d'adjectifs, il est donc préférable d'utiliser 'moyen-orientale' en outre plus économe en mots.

-> En effet, ce serait intéressant d'avoir le nom dont "moyen-orientale" est l'épithète pour décider ce qui serait mieux au niveau du style. Une "femme du Moyen-Orient" me plaît plus qu'une "femme moyen-orientale", par ex.

Bonjour Arnold, pour info. J'entends et lis (encore) très souvent "Proche-Orient" en France.

"Le Proche-Orient est une région d'Asie et d'Afrique comprenant les pays du sud-est du bassin méditerranéen. On l'englobe souvent dans le Moyen-Orient (traduction de l'expression anglo-saxonne de plus en plus largement utilisée de Middle East). Un synonyme plus ancien est le Levant (là où le soleil se lève).

L'expression « Proche-Orient » trouve son origine dans le vocabulaire français de la fin du XIXe siècle. Cette région a joué un rôle primordial dans l'histoire stratégique de la France. L'usage de l'adjectif « proche » permettait de diviser l'Orient en un « Extrême-Orient », situé en Asie de l'Est, et un « Proche-Orient », à l'est du bassin méditerranéen. Aujourd'hui, on a tendance à employer indistinctement « Proche-Orient » et « Moyen-Orient » (traduction de l'anglais Middle East, privilégiant le premier terme lorsqu'on désigne les pays limitrophes de la Méditerranée orientale)."
