The steel material may include a sheerly hardened material such as, for exemple, high-carbon chromium containing steel (SUJ" and so on).
I can't find what sheerly exactly means. Is it derived from sheer? but then, can "matériau durci finement" be OK ?

Il semble qu'ici, l'auteur qualifie "hardened" (trempé) pour faire la différence avec "case hardened" (cémenté). En anglais, lorsqu'on parle de métaux, "tempered" et "hardened" sont synonymes. De plus, je n'avais jamais vu le terme "sheerly hardened" auparavant, et avec raison, car il n'est utilisé nulle part. Si l'on fait une recherche sur Google, Yahoo, etc., on ne retrouve nulle part ces deux mots utilisés ensemble. Je suggère donc de rester dans des termes usuels et facilement digestibles.
