disagree  Tony M: Absolutely not! For one thing, it is a standard fastener, and for another, it is nut = écrou and palm = paume; so at worst, it would be 'écrou de paume'!

Here's a web page with all sorts of different varieties of 'knobs that can be operated by hand' (and others) — this is what I also know by the term 'palm nut'; I wonder if perhaps that is a US term?
