The patient is injected with a substance similar to somatostatin (somatostatin analogue), which is labelled with the radioactive substance 111Indium. This so-called tracer binds to the somatostatin receptor cells so that a special imaging device called a gamma camera can register the increased accumulation of the radioactive tracer at the tumour site.
