Prods are only used by FMC for special situations. Prods are useful for examining areas that are too congested to use magnetic yokes. They may also be useful for examining the backgouged root of a weld or an excavated repair area.

Prods must not be used to examine wetted or sealing surfaces.

Prod units are available from several manufacturers. Prod equipment must have a built in remote control switch so as to prevent inadvertent arcing during use.

2.2 Prod tips should be aluminum, copper braid or copper pads rather than solid copper which can cause base metal contamination.

2.3 The use of equipment with a voltage > 25V open circuit shall be avoided to prevent penetration of copper into the part being inspected. If such equipment is required, the prods contacting the part surface shall be made from steel, lead or aluminum.

2.4 Stationary and portable equipment shall have an ammeter. Each ammeter shall be calibrated at least once per year, after each electrical maintenance, equipment revision or damage. Calibration shall be by performing comparative readings in at least three levels of current and the deviation shall not be greater than 10% of the actual current value.
