English term or phrase: pursuit party
[Some Bulgarian guerillas] slept, ate, drank (maybe a little too much), gathered strength and were ready to go on their way when, out of nowhere, a poterya, ***a pursuit party***, arrived in the village. No doubt some local coward had betrayed our brothers.

Explanation:
A pursuit party is ( I think) sent after people to hunt them down.
I'd suggest this then.

I also thought about "chasseur" but that sounds too much like hunting to me.

groupe de chasse

Explanation:
According to a bulgarian friend, this could be a "hunting team", and I suspect that the translation in English "pursuit" could be related to the term "pursuit plane" which is "avion de chasse" in French.
A "party" per my understanding is rather an informal group of people than a military section or brigade.
