English term or phrase: to serve in the military/army

Bonjour
Pourriez-vous m'éclairer sur le passage suivant ?
Contexte : lors d'une enquête de police pour meurtre, des indices mettent les enquêteurs sur la piste d'un ancien GI. Voici le passage en question. L'échange a lieu entre deux enquêteurs :
- Number of employees who served in the military ?
- Three.
- How many Army ?
- Just two.
J'aurais spontanément traduit la première phrase par "Combien d'employés ont servi dans l'Armée ?" mais la question qui suit "How many army?" m'en empêche. Du coup, je ne vois pas bien comment rendre cela en français. Quelle différence entre "serve in the military" et "serve in the army".

On désigne maintenant par "armée", dans son sens global (cad terre, air et mer) le plus souvent "les forces armées" ou plus simplement par "les armées". S'agissant plus spécifiquement de "army", elle est effectivement en France "l'armée de terre".
J'en suis d'autant plus sûr que j'y ai servi de nombreuses années ;-)

Autre précision de taille, cependant :
- seul un militaire peut "servir" dans l'armée, un civil quant à lui y est seulement "employé" ! Attention donc à la traduction du dialogue !
