Hachette Oxford dictionary says(implying narrow escape) for instance, he almost died = il a failli mourir; they almost
missed the train = ils ont failli rater le train.

Explanation:
If your sentence reads : "I almost missed the bus"(almost do something), then you cannot use "presque" or "à peu près". You cannot say "J'ai presque raté le bus". You must say "J'ai failli rater le bus" : faillir + infinitive.

Just a thought because without any context for guidance...
