English term or phrase: green fascist
Environment/Politics

Is there a term equivalent to the UK usage, "green fascist", in France? In the UK it's used in instances where green activists oppose technological developments or land developments of some kind which are claimed to be progressive and bring benefits to people. It combines the ideas of these green activists being doctrinaire, aggressive in opposing their beliefs on others, anti-humane and backward-looking, wedded to the idea of some kind of mythical rural idyll.

It seems one cannot translate literally. I have found the phrase "fascistes verts" - but only in the context of post-September 11 to describe the Taliban (referring to their green flag).

I have found one very recent usage of the phrase "réactionnaires postmodernes", (in Le Point), in relation to anti-globalisation protesters/"bovistes" which conveys much of the same meaning and I imagine is just as offensive to the activists. Has this caught on (in so far as such a fancy phrase can catch on)? Am I right in thinking that there seems to be a recent fashion for calling Bové and the Conf. Paysan "réactionnaire"?

Is there no more specific phrase including specifically anti-green meaning, France being rather an anti-green country?

Sorry this is so long.....

-> No, it doesn't - but it's not usual to call people 'fascist' and it would be breaking the law to write or say it.

Equivalent to "deep greens" in English - less forceful than 'fascist', but covers some of the pejorative connotation.

fascistes verts, extrémistes verts

Explanation:
Fran,

Some answers to the questions you are actually asking:
- there is no commonly accepted derogatory term used to describe Greens or anti-globalisation activists in France
- réactionnaires hasn't caught on. It is only used in common parlance to denigrate people with right-wing opinions.
- don't be mistaken about France being anti-green. It's true that the traditional green agenda has never been very popular in France. However, the food scares of recent years and the new anti-globalisation dimension of the green movement have actually given a new lustre to the latter and it is very politically incorrect to criticise José Bové and the like. Everybody pays lip service to anti-globalisation, French ministers attended the Porto Alegre summit en force, etc.
- how does that help you with your translation? Basically, I think your source text is out of step with anything that would currently be acceptable in polite society in France. The best solution for me is therefore to translate literally, using "guillemets" if necessary, or to go with extrémistes verts, which clearly conveys that the author doesn't approve of the green ideas in question.
I hope this helps. And no more 16-hour days!
