Me revoilà !
C'est toute la phrase qui me pose problème - pas au plan linguistique, je n'ai pas besoin d'une trad. Il me manque du contexte pour saisir le message de l'auteur derrière ces mots. La phrase fait partie d'un encadré dédié à Girardengo surnommé 'Gira'. Belloni lui rend ici hommage. Je ne vois pas le rapport entre "names of pretty girls" et "Gira".
Voici le passage entier :
After Girardendo's crushing win in the Giro d'Italia (Tour d'Italie)in 1923, with 7 stages wins out of ten, the runner-up Gaetano Belloni admitted: "I'll never be a campionissimo (super champion)but the names of a few pretty girls will be etched on my heart", and the name (de qui ?) was instantly adopted instead of "Gira".

gironde : se dit d'une femme bien en chair, de l'ancien français "girer"

ce pourrait être une racine latine/italienne
