Can't translate into French, unfortunately...
The author is trying to provide you with an example of what would make you, the dog handler, want to bring the dog down to a lying position. The phrase itself asks you to imagine a scenario where a skunk (moufette) is walking toward the dog. Along the same lines, the author may have offered a scenario wherein the dog would be expected to "heel" in a situation "such as a dog of the opposite sex ambling down the path (walking along) toward your dog."
