l’the autofocus was slow, and the lens tended to swim in and out for a second or two before locking onto the subject.

i would leave out the metaphor unless the document is explicitely non prosaic. and anyway, it is not even just the lens that does the controlling, the lens only obeys the software. the PowerShot G7 (i don't think these camera users like the idea of calling it a snapshot g7) probably focusses on the delta contrast registered by the sensor.
