Je pense qu'il fait référence à la composition de la maquette...
... when they ***photographed something for positioning/placing/mounting (it) on a job (make-up)...
lorsqu'ils photographiaient quelque chose à monter sur la maquette ... ils en prenaient une photographie au trait (pour le positionnement comme si bien expliqué par Tony), puis ils le remplaçaient par le simili (le tramé).

Goldblatt et une brochette de jeunes plasticiens travaillèrent à donner une image « cool » au jazz. Son travail était plutôt basé sur de l’illustration au trait (ou photographique) en noir et blanc a laquelle il rajoutait des aplats de couleurs pleines.

Le job ici, c'est l'ouvrage, le travail (dans le sens de l'imprimé à réaliser). Job works = travaux de ville.
