It is many years now since the American NBS (National Bureau of Standards) developed the NBS crumple tester for subjecting paper to the test. Using the device it is possible to tell beforehand whether a certain paper is suitable for the often rough and sometimes even fraudulent handing that it is liable to be subjected to. The test imitates the most extreme conditions of handling that the banknote is liable to be exposed to and can be executed using either wet or dry samples.

The crumple test so far
The operation is as follows: A sample piece of paper measuring 64 x 64 mm with a marked vertex is pushed over fork (A) on the device and rolled up when it starts to rotate. The little pipe with cover is removed from the device, the cover is then closed and the rolled up piece of paper is pushed into the pipe on the open side. The pipe is then pushed over the plunger in the vertical pipe on the device until it can go no further. The cover is now pressed in by hand until weight (E) rises. The sample piece of paper is treated this way until it forms a crumpled ball. This ball is removed from the sleeve and carefully pulled apart by hand until it begins to resemble a sheet of paper again. The paper sample must on no account be smoothed out. In relation to the original position in the fork, the sample paper is rotated a quarter turn and then the whole procedure is started up again. This crumpling is carried out sixteen times during a complete test procedure whereby the sample is continually rotated by 90°. The sample is finally assessed for the adhesion of the holograms and /or porosity according to accepted testing procedures such as Bekk, Bendtsen or PPS, or for absorption according to the Cobb test. The tensile strength can also be measured. The test readings are then compared with the readings of an original, non-crumpled piece of paper to verify whether they meet the necessary standards as set by the individual company concerned.
