Il est suggéré de commencer avec une faible dose (5,0 mg de Ritalin) et de l'augmenter graduellement jusqu'à ce que la réponse soit adéquate sans que les effets secondaires soient importants. La dose se calcule en fonction du poids de l'enfant: 0,3mg/kg à 1mg/kg. En général, la dose pour un enfant de 6 à 12 ans se situe entre 10 et 20 mg, soit environ 0,5 à 0,8mg/kg. Une dose trop faible n'aura pas les effets recherchés alors qu'une dose trop forte pourrait engendrer des effets secondaires indésirables.
Maxim (8 ans) prend présentement 30 mg par jour (10 mg le matin, 10 mg le midi et 10 mg à 16:00 heures). Je connais un enfant de 8 ans aussi qui prend 50 mg par jour et le pédiatre pense à augmenter sa dose à 60 mg par jour. Chaque enfant est unique, il s'agit de voir, en collaboration avec tous les intervenants, la dose appropriée pour chacun."
