"Ces différents modèles, bien que différents en quelques points, suivent la même ligne
directrice. Ils supposent qu’il existerait deux voies distinctes de traitement de l’information, ne qui serait analytique et l’autre heuristique. La voie analytique ou voie centrale serait donc celle par laquelle nous traiterions les messages de façon détaillée, il y aurait une prise en compte de chaque argument du message.L’utilisation de cette voie suppose le traitement du contenu sémantique et un effort cognitif important, le sujet doit donc être impliqué et motivé par la tâche qu’il est en train d’effectuer. La voie heuristique ou périphérique quant à elle, serait la voie que nous utiliserions lorsque nous serions peu disponibles cognitivement. Dans ce cas le traitement du message tiendrait davantage compte des caractéristiques de la source et de propriétés non sémantiques."
