Certains facteurs de croissance peuvent également avoir plus de quatre noms différents: le facteur codé par le locus Steel, ou Steel Factor, (Sl F) s'appelle également kit ligand car il se fixe sur le récepteur kit, mais aussi Stem Cell Factor car il agit sur des cellules très immatures, ou encore Mast Cell Growth Factor car il agit aussi sur les mastocytes. Il est clair qu'il faudra un jour établir une nomenclature pour mettre de l'ordre dans ces diverses dénominations.
