“The hull form is portrayed graphically by the ‘lines plan’ or ‘sheer plan’ (Figure 2.45). This shows the various curves of intersection between the hull and the three sets of orthogonal places. […] The curves showing the intersection of the fore and aft planes are grouped in the “sheer profile” the waterlines are grouped in the “half length plan” and the sections by transverse planes in the “body plan”.”

« Un navire est un flotteur de forme allongée ayant, dans le sens de sa plus grande dimension, un plan de symétrie appelé ‘plan longitudinal’. Sa carène, dans un état de chargement déterminé, est le volume géométrique correspondant à la partie immergée. Le « plan horizontal » limitant en eau calme la carène est le plan de flottaison, ou flottaison. Un navire est droit lorsque son « plan longitudinal » est vertical.
La carène d'un navire varie avec le chargement. Les formes de la partie immergeable ne peuvent, sauf cas très particulier, être totalement définies par une formulation mathématique ; il est nécessaire de recourir à une représentation graphique, dite plan des formes (fig. 1).
Un plan des formes normalisé comprend trois séries de sections de la surface extérieure du flotteur par des plans parallèles à trois plans orthogonaux : le « plan longitudinal », une flottaison de référence correspondant au navire droit dans un état de chargement particulier, et un plan vertical perpendiculaire aux deux précédents. On appelle carène droite une carène dont la flottaison est parallèle à la flottaison de référence du plan des formes. »
