Yet we must also recognise the significance of cultural factors that relate to patterns of leaving home. There are differences in tradition, particularly between the north and south of Europe that provide some explanation. In the south co-habitation with partners and sharing accommodation with friends is less common. It can also be argued that independence is valued more highly in the north with parents encouraging early leaving. In the south, the family can be seen as playing a more prominent role; interdependence is valued and there are long-standing conventions regarding extended support.
