English term or phrase: striker's challenge
Steve Finnan and Daniel Van Buyten are the real, unsung heroes of this Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Why? Because the Irish full-back and the Belgian defender have both racked up 450 minutes of playing time and only committed a single foul.
In contrast, the Czech Republic’s talismanic striker Jan Koller has been penalised 29 times in 799 minutes of play. That sounds a lot but it’s only a foul every 27 minutes. Mind you, Koller, who is a mere 2.02m (6ft 8in) tall, could hardly have been penalised for climbing on an opponent.
When commentators knowingly remark “that was a real striker’s challenge”, the statistics suggest they’re onto something. Behind Koller is Slovenia and MSV Duisburg striker Klemen Lavric (26 fouls in 909 minutes), while Norway’s target man John Carew (24 fouls in 706 minutes) and Romania’s tricky striker Adrian Mutu (24 fouls in 805 minutes) are conspicuous repeat offenders.

Explanation:
striker = buteur
challenge = challenge,concours,competition
